2 Day Battlefields of Natal Guided Tour

South Africa has a relatively short, volatile recorded history.

Some fierce battles were fought such as the battle of Isandlwana where Great Britain probably suffered its greatest defeat against indigenous army in its military history, Rorke's Drift where the most Victoria Cross medals for bravery were awarded, and the Battle of Spioenkop where the morning fog and a few miscalculations cost many of lives.

This tour covers the scenes a few of these famous battles fought between Zulu, Boer and British. Stories of exceptional bravery and wholesale slaughter are softly told in emotional voices.

The eeriness one experiences at some battlefields are quite real and unnerving, turning the tour into an extraordinary event.

This tour is operated in a smaller luxury vehicles and in smaller groups.

Day 1: Durban – Pietermaritzburg – Spionkop – Ladysmith - Talana
We travel westwards to Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, for a brief city tour. Stop at the railway station where Mahatma Gandhi was thrown off the train because of the colour of his skin, and see the waiting room, where, in the silence of the night he formulated his philosophy of passive resistance.

Visit the Church of the Vow that was built as a result of the Battle of Blood River between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus in 1838. Then onwards to the hills where the Battle of Spionkop took place. Here, famous personalities like Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and General Louis Botha, were active in different capacities. Standing on the spot, the terrible incident unfolds again.

At Ladysmith we visit the Siege Museum for an insight into the siege of Ladysmith and stories of suffering and heroism. Our overnight stop is outside Dundee after we visit the Talana Battlefield – the site of the first battle of the Anglo-Boer War.

Day 2: Rorke’s Drift – Isandlwana – Umgungundluvo - Durban
This morning we cover the famous and awe inspiring battlefields of Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana. At our last stop, we get an insight into the clashes between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus.

We visit Umgungundlovu, the reconstructed home of Dingane who was responsible for the massacre of the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief, and many of his men. This, in turn, led to the Battle of Blood River in 1838. Here we visit the grave of Piet Retief. We return to Durban via Melmoth and Eshowe and arrive early evening.

2 Day Battlefields of Natal Guided Tour Reviews

Reviewed by Thomas Webb on over a year ago
This tour was a joy from the moment we boarded the bus till our guide David, who had become a family friend by this time, dropped us off. It was not of course possible to see everything within the two days and David tailored our visits to places and a pace that suited us. His knowledge of and pride in his homeland came through strongly and we were unable to ask any questions that he didn't know the answer to. From flora and fauna for my wife to the battles of long ago for an old soldier. The vehicle was first class and the driving very safe. In all a wonderful trip, in a spectacular country with an expert guide. We recommend it to anyone.
