African Wild Life Experience

Northern KwaZulu-Natal has arguably the greatest diversity of habitats in South Africa. These include open bushveld, coastal dune forests, lakes, rivers, mangrove forests, subtropical marsh-lands and a magnificent coastline with endless, and in some areas completely deserted, sandy beaches.

The animals found here range from the 'Big Five' to the shy nyala and the tiny suni as well as prolific bird life. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park is not only the oldest reserve in Africa, but also the place where the white rhino was saved from extinction.

Today the park is the third largest in South Africa and the only reserve where you are virtually assured of good rhino sightings.

The region is also the home of the mighty Zulus and we get some insight into their age-old culture when we visit an authentic Zulu village.

The last day, after a final game drive, we visit the famous lake St Lucia, now proclaimed a world heritage site. We join a boat cruise on the lake and see a proliferation of birdlife, crocodile and hippo in their natural habitat.

Day 1: Zulu Cultural Village – St Lucia – Rhino River Lodge
We travel north towards the subtropical coast and bushveld of Zululand. Arrive at the village of St Lucia situated in the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, proclaimed a world heritage site in 1999. We join a boat cruise on Lake St Lucia, a natural paradise around which five complete ecosystems exist. An abundance of bird life, hippo and crocodiles exist here and we have a chance to find them. After lunch (not included) we depart for our private reserve and after check in join and open vehicle safari where our close encounter with the African wildlife commences. Return later for a sumptuous dinner.
Overnight Zulu Nyala Game Lodge. Dinner included.

Day 2: Rhino Reserve
This morning we join an early open vehicle safari in search of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) amongst many other of Africa’s amazing wildlife such as giraffe, zebra, kudu, etc. We take a break at a scenic spot in the bush and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and rusks before we continue. On our return we enjoy a mid-morning breakfast and you are free to enjoy the scenery around the lodge. A light lunch is served and some free time before we embark on the afternoon safari. At sundown we stop for sundowners in the bush and continue towards the camp for a hearty dinner around a fire in the open Boma under the African starry skies. Retire for a well-deserved rest.
Overnight Zulu Nyala Game Lodge. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3: Rhino River Lodge – Zulu Cultural Show - Durban
We rise early and embark on our final open vehicle safari. We return for our mid-morning breakfast and depart for a visit to a Zulu village where we experience the age-old Zulu culture first-hand. We visit the Sangoma (a diviner also erroneously called the 'Witch doctor') and are treated to some authentic tribal dancing. Then travel to Mtunzini, a village perched on a hill overlooking the beach with a beautiful dune forest and an estuary lined with a mangrove swamp forest. The town is a declared Conservancy with the streets lined with indigenous trees.

A forest of Raphia palm trees attract the Palm-nut Vulture, South Africa’s rarest breeding bird of prey - found only here and at Kosi Bay. We take short walks along the Umlalazi River, the estuary and an optional short boat ride if time and weather permits to see the African fish eagle catching a fish. Then we return to Durban where we arrive late afternoon.

I would highly recommend this type of tour. My guide was friendly, interesting and very knowledgeable and because there were only the two of us, he could tailor the tour to suit me and as an added bonus he shared my love of the varied South African birds.
Zulu Nyala, where we spent two nights, is a luxurious lodge with panoramic views over the conservation areas and helpful, charming staff. Two game drives - one mid-afternoon and one early morning revealed elephant, a cheetah, rhino - black and white, giraffe and hippo and to me, the most exciting, a martial eagle. However, the best day was in Hluhluwe and Umfolozi Game Parks where it is really wild and natural.

We absolutely loved our African Wild Life Experience we booked through Sa Places Tours. It was very easy to book online and everything was organised for us for our departure in Durban with our wonderful guide, Brett Drew. He was extremely professional, knowledgeable, informative, passionate about everything we experienced on our unforgettable 3 day safari. He was also brilliant with both of our children aged 9 and 7 years. He kept them interested the whole safari. At all times, Brett had contact with Beate from the SA Places Tours office, who was also very helpful and assisted promptly with any problems we had. We stayed at Zulu Nyala which was very comfortable and experienced 2 wonderful game drives as well as spending an incredible whole day on safari in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve sighting many amazing different wildlife. On our way back to Durban we had a very informative Zulu Cultural Experience and also stopped at the Raffia Palms Monument. Brett took all the guess work out for us and made our safari extremely memorable. We would never had achieved what we experienced in 3 days without Brett. Our family motto while on safari was "expect the unexpected!"

Fantastic tour, excellent safari and very comfortable accommodation at Zulu Nyala Lodge. The tour guide you get is crucial. Ours, David dela Querra, was frankly brilliant. Highly experienced, knew the area and his history inside out, and was both charming, highly considerate and worked very hard to ensure we got the maximum experience out of the Safari.

The tour was fabulous and what made it extra special was David. His knowledge and passion for South Africa was evident. Also, since it was only the two of us he did a great job of being quiet at times and talking at times. ie he did not feel he had to talk the whole time and I really appreciated that. I needed a break and David was able to help me get one. The tour itself was great - I described it to my friends here in Vancouver as "Out of Africa on Steroids." The facilites at the lodge were perfect, food was good etc etc. No issues at all and when (not if) I return to South AFrica I will definitely book a tour with you.
